What make’s you special?
February is here! And it’s time to introduce this beautiful topic to our little ones. Birds! What better way to talk about what makes a bird unique, than discuss what make’s you unique?
Our little sprouts got right to it, thinking about what makes them special. Sense of humor, creativity, silliness, or ability to care. Do you realize they aren’t saying their good looks? Beautiful hair or eye colors? It’s amazing how children view the world and how eventually it shifts. Let’s hold these unique traits as long as we can and nurture them.
So what makes a bird special and unique? Feathers, wings, beaks, tail feathers, and of course, the ability to fly!
We took time to trace our wing span and cut out recycled cardboard into whatever shape the child wanted. Decorating with paint and feathers, the children then added string to hold onto.
After that, they took flight! Pretending to be birds, flying around the beautiful park with their peers.
Try this activity at home!
Materials:
Feathers
Paint
Recycled cardboard
Glue
Scissors
String
Directions:
Trace your child’s wing span (the distance from one arm to the next)
Then, have them draw the shape of wings they would like to create
Cut the cardboard out along their drawing
Decorate to your heart’s desire! Feathers and paint work well, but you can try a variety of scrap paper, tissue paper, or other recycled items you have laying around.
Poke two holes on each end of the wing, and thread your string through it.
The child can either hold onto the strings, or you can tie them around their arms/wrists for some pretend flying.
We’d love to see you try this! Post comments, and photos or tag us on our Instagram! @beautifulrootseducation
